Murcia by motorhome: wild camping rules, routes and where to stay

What the regional law says about awnings and overnight parking, and the inland route most motorhomers miss.

Murcia is good motorhome country. Short driving days, a mild climate all year and a region where coast, orchards and mountains all fit within an hour and a bit at the wheel. It is no surprise that so many European motorhomes head here for the winter.

Two things catch out many visitors from the first night: what the regional law actually says about putting out your awning, and the fact that a quiet, green interior begins less than half an hour from the city of Murcia.

We run a campsite in Abarán, in the Ricote Valley, and these are the questions our motorhome guests ask most. Here are the rules, the routes and where to stay.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Wild camping: not allowed. Regional Decree 193/2022 bans camping with a motorhome, caravan or camper outside regulated sites.
  • Parking overnight: where municipal rules allow it, you may park and sleep inside, but with no awning, table, chairs or levelling blocks.
  • Where you can spread out: only on a registered campsite or motorhome area, inside your pitch.
  • Best season: all year. Winter is mild and sunny; inland, summer days are hot and nights cool.
  • The inland route: the Ricote Valley starts 25 minutes from Murcia, with legs of 3 to 22 minutes between villages.

Can you wild camp in Murcia with a motorhome?

No. And the difference between parking and camping is set by law, not by common sense.

Decree 193/2022 of 27 October (published in the regional gazette, BORM no. 254, on 3 November 2022) regulates campsites and motorhome areas in the Region of Murcia. Two articles matter to you.

Article 4: when you count as camping

It prohibits camping with a motorhome, caravan or camper outside regulated establishments, and it defines when you are considered to be camping: if you extend the footprint of the vehicle by putting things out, if you level it with chocks, or if you empty waste on to the road.

In a public car park, then: no awning, no table, no chairs and no levelling. You sleep inside and move on.

Article 40: what you may do on a site

On a registered campsite or motorhome area you may open the awning, put out a table and chairs, level the vehicle and open the windows, always within the limits of your pitch.

That is why a free parking space and a paid pitch are not the same thing, even if both have room for your van. Full text in Spanish: Decree 193/2022 in the BORM.

Where to stay overnight with a motorhome in Murcia

Three options, and they are not equivalent:

Where What it is What you may do

Motorhome area (aire) Tourist accommodation with a single category Awning, table, chairs and levelling inside your pitch. Motorhomes only
Campsite Tourist accommodation rated from 1 to 5 stars All of the above, plus full facilities. Tents too

Wintering in Murcia in a motorhome

Inland Murcia has some of the driest, sunniest winters in mainland Spain, and many motorhomers settle for weeks or months rather than moving on every night. If that is your plan, our long stay rate goes by how long you stay:

  • From 30 nights: €22 a night.
  • From 120 nights: €16 a night (€480 a month).
  • Included: electricity with no meter and free laundry; dogs stay free from 120 nights.

Everything is explained on our winter long stay pitches in Murcia page. The difference from the coast is the setting: orchards, waterwheels and quiet villages instead of a seafront aire, with Murcia city 35 minutes away for the market and the shops.

Inland Murcia by motorhome: driving the Ricote Valley

From the city of Murcia, the valley begins 25 minutes away at Archena. After that the legs are so short you can see three villages before lunch.

Leg Distance Time
Murcia → Archena26.8 km23 min
Archena → Villanueva del Río Segura5.3 km7 min
Villanueva → Ulea1.2 km3 min
Ulea → Ojós4.8 km6 min
Ojós → Ricote3.0 km3 min
Ricote → Blanca23.4 km22 min
Blanca → Abarán4.9 km6 min
Abarán → Cieza5.7 km7 min

Legs calculated with OpenStreetMap between village centres, without traffic.

Driving it in a large vehicle: the Ricote to Blanca leg is the only demanding one, because the road climbs over the sierra. Do it in daylight and without hurrying. In Ojós and Ricote, leave the van before you enter the village: the streets are narrow and you will not be able to turn. The villages one by one, with viewpoints and what to see at each stop, are in our Ricote Valley guide.

Combining it with the coast

If you arrive along the coast or want to mix the two, these are the driving times from Abarán:

From Áureo Natura to Distance Time
Cartagena89 km1 h 10 min
San Pedro del Pinatar (Mar Menor)88 km1 h 10 min
La Manga108 km1 h 25 min
Mazarrón101 km1 h 20 min
Águilas130 km1 h 35 min
  • Cartagena: Roman theatre, the port and modernist old town, best seen on foot.
  • Mar Menor and La Manga: shallow lagoon waters and the salt pans of San Pedro del Pinatar.
  • Mazarrón: the eroded clay formations of Bolnuevo, right by the beach.
  • Águilas: the castle of San Juan, coves and a carnival in February.

The coast is busy with motorhomes all winter. Inland is quieter, which works in your favour if you travel outside the summer: walks without the heat, the spa when it turns cool, and the Cieza peach blossom in February and March.

Driving down from northern Europe

Most motorhomes reach Murcia down the Mediterranean corridor (E-15 / AP-7) through France, Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante; from Murcia the A-30 brings you to Abarán in about 35 minutes. From the UK, the ferries from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao or Santander leave you about 750 km from our gate. Full directions, including the motorhome route, are on our how to get here page.

The plan that makes the stop in Abarán worth it

The Waterwheel Route (SL-MU 28) is a 4.4 km circular path, easy, done in a little over an hour. It links four working waterwheels on the Segura, all still turning. The Noria Grande is almost 12 metres across. The path holds the Sendero Azul award and the landscape it crosses has been a protected Bien de Interés Cultural since 2018. It starts 6 minutes from the campsite.

From the same pitch you can raft the river (our Segura river rafting guide), see the blossom or drive the valley. And in the second half of September, Abarán's patron saint festivities fill the town, with the main day on 27 September.
