Is a long stay winter pitch right for you?
Straight answer, because four months is too long to get this wrong.
It suits you if:
- You travel in a motorhome, a touring caravan or a campervan and you want one base, not a different aire every three nights.
- You want a fixed monthly cost you can work out before you leave home.
- You would rather have a valley, a river and citrus terraces outside the window than a coastal strip.
- You are travelling alone or as a couple and you would like to know a few faces by Christmas.
- You have a dog. The supplement drops the longer you stay: €1.50 a night from 30 nights, €1 from 60, €0.50 from 90, and free from 120 nights. No restriction on breed or size.
It does not suit you if:
- You want to swim outdoors in January. The pool here runs May to October and nothing changes that.
- You want a heated indoor pool. There isn't one. There is a private spa instead, and for some people that is a fair swap and for others it isn't.
- You want an entertainment team, a stage and a programme every night. Two coastal resorts do that well and this is not one of them.
- You want the warmest daytime temperatures in Spain. Those are on the southern coast.

Electricity on a Spanish campsite, and what you pay here
Spanish sites bill electricity in one of two ways. On stays under four nights you usually pay a flat rate of €4 to €6 a night. On anything longer, most sites fit a meter and charge €0.35 to €0.60 per kWh, which is close to double the Spanish domestic rate.
In winter that gap matters, because heating is where your power actually goes. A caravan running a heater through a cold inland night gets through more units than the whole of the rest of the day.

Your electricity is in the monthly rate, so there is no meter to read and no bill waiting for you at the end of February. A site charging €0.45 per kWh would add somewhere around €300 to €400 over a four-month winter, on a typical 10 kWh a day in cold weather. Here that figure is zero.

Three or four wet days a month. Seven to nine hours of sun a day in the middle of winter. January rainfall of 26 mm puts this among the driest inhabited corners of mainland Spain, and the afternoons are shirtsleeves weather in the sun.
The nights are cool. An average low of 3.2 °C in January sits below the coast, and your heating will run most evenings. You will find that written on this page rather than discovered in December, and it is the reason the electricity here is unlimited rather than metered.
The spa is yours for the hour
The outdoor pool runs May to October. In winter it is closed, and there is no heated indoor pool here.
What there is instead: a wellness centre with a water circuit and a steam room that you book by the hour, privately. The session is yours.

How long can you stay on a UK passport?
Since Brexit a UK passport allows 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, across the whole Schengen area rather than Spain alone.
Three things travellers get wrong:
- The 180 days roll. They do not reset in January. On any given day the authorities count back 180 days and add up your time in the zone.
- Both travel days count. Arrival and departure are full days, whatever time you cross the border.
- France and Portugal count too. The drive down uses part of the allowance.
In practice a winter season fits inside a standard tourist entry if you plan the dates before you book the ferry. Staying beyond 90 days needs a national long stay visa, applied for at a Spanish consulate before you travel rather than once you have arrived.

The valley, and what a winter here actually looks like
You are on the Segura, in the Ricote Valley, surrounded by citrus terraces and Moorish waterwheels that nobody driving down to Benidorm ever sees.
Within thirty minutes: Ricote, Ojós, Ulea, Blanca, and the thermal baths at Archena. In February the Cieza blossom opens twenty minutes up the road, tens of thousands of peach and apricot trees in flower at once. Walking and cycling start at the gate. Murcia city has the market and the tapas.
This is a different winter from the coastal strip. For a certain traveller it is the whole point of coming.

Booking, and getting your money back if plans change
No minimum stay. Rates drop from 30 nights: €22 a night from 30, €20 from 60, €18 from 90 and €16 from 120. The season runs 1 September to 30 April.

Questions people ask before they book
How much is electricity on a Spanish campsite?
Typically €4 to €6 a night as a flat rate on short stays, or €0.35 to €0.60 per kWh on a meter for longer ones. Here there is no meter and no allowance: electricity is included in the monthly rate with no limit, so a four-month winter costs you nothing in power.
Is electricity cheaper in Spain than in the UK?
The Spanish domestic rate sits between €0.15 and €0.25 per kWh, below the UK, but campsites usually bill above domestic rates to cover their infrastructure. That is why it matters whether a site meters you at all.

Is Spain warm enough in winter for camping?
Inland Murcia averages daytime highs of 14 to 18 °C from November to March, with seven to nine hours of sun a day and three or four wet days a month. Nights average 3 to 7 °C, so heating is necessary, which is why the electricity here is unlimited and included.
Which part of Spain is warmest in winter?
The warmest daytime temperatures on the mainland are on the southern coasts. Inland Murcia is not the warmest, though January rainfall of 26 mm makes it one of the driest and sunniest.
